Some of you wondered why we no longer sell castile soap. When
we began selling this soap, the label listed olive/coconut oil
and "potassium solution" as ingredients. Unfortunately
we now know that this "potassium solution" is actually
"potassium hydroxide". Potassium hydroxide is made by
electrolysis of potassium chloride. The book "Consumer's
Dictionary of Cosmetic Ingredients" says:
When applied to the skin of mice, moderate dosages may cause
tumors. May cause skin rash and burning. Extremely corrosive.
Concentrations above 5% can destroy fingernails.
The book "Beauty to Die For" says:
It is commonly called lye and is used as an alkalizer. Shown
to cause extreme eye and skin irritation. Carcinogenic, mutagenic,
toxic.
