Water isn't needed by newborns, and it can be dangerous for them, according to a 4 year study done by the Centre for Disease Control in Atlanta. Water given to newborns can cause water intoxication: an altered mental state, low body temperature, bloating, seizures, and even death. Because a newborn's kidneys are not yet fully functional, the baby's system becomes overloaded when given water, and the sodium in the blood drops to a low level. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends against giving young babies plain water. Babies get all the water they need through breastmilk or formula. (Journal of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine)
