Halloween Tips:
1. We respect all religions, but suggest that parents who are being made to worry about the effects of Halloween on their child's spiritual development, can relax, because children look at dressing up and getting treats as simply "fun". (If you disagree, we welcome your comments on the forum at our website!)

2. Involve your child in costume-making, and if the child is over age 10, let him or her do most of the costume. It will help the child's creativity and self-confidence. Avoid purchasing a costume off the rack!!!

3. Dress for the weather--if you live in a colder climate, as we do, be sure to choose a costume that will allow for a jacket, and perhaps snow pants, underneath.

4. Avoid face masks, so the child can see in the dark, and avoid tripping on stairs, traffic hazards, etc. Use face paint (you can make your own with the recipe below).

5. Rehearse what the child should say when requesting and after receiving treats.

6. For safety's sake, go with the child! Instruct the child not to go inside a stranger's house. Choose a neighborhood that you know.

7. As you know by now, check all the candy and treats before letting your child eat them.

8. Have lots of vegetables and fruits with your meals, to balance the "junk" that your child will be having. If your child is sensitive, limiting the amount of nuts and chocolate will help avoid canker sores that can spoil the fun. But, I wouldn't suggest taking the treat bag away from the child; let your child develop good judgement and self-discipline by regulating his own intake. That's how we learn!

9. Enjoy the fun with your child!

Face Paint Recipe
1 Tablespoon soft shortening
2 Tablespoons Cornstarch
Food Coloring

Mix the cornstarch and shortening with a fork. Add food coloring and mix. You can divide the mixture before adding food coloring if you only need small quantities. Will keep if refrigerated.
You can combine food coloring to make other colors: one drop red + 2 drops green makes brown. One drop blue + 2 drops red makes purple. Experiment!
This is non-toxic as it is made from edible ingredients. It washes off easily with soap and water.
